Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT DOES MERV MEAN?
MERV or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value is a filter rating system credited to the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). It simplifies filter efficiency ratings; the higher the MERV rating, the more efficient the filter should be at capturing smaller particles.
HOW DO I GET THE CORRECT SIZE FILTER?
If it’s not on the filter, measure the length, width, (if your filter is not square, the smaller number goes first) and depth. Standard sizes are often half an inch less than advertised, remember to round up to the next whole number for the right air filter size after measurements.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY AIR FILTER?
It’s recommended that you change your air filter every three months. It should be changed sooner if there is an increase in air particulates from activities such as construction or renovation. Energy Star (www.energystar.gov), recommends that filters should be changed every month during peak summer and winter months, this is the highest capacity time for HVAC systems.
WHAT MAINTENANCE IS NEEDED FOR AIR FILTERS?
The most common maintenance you’ll need for your filter is to replace every three months.
